Beliefs, Externalism, Internalism, Rational ChoiceAbstract
In this paper we analyse how two different branches of rational choice theory tackle the relationship between social identity and collective action. On the one hand, externalist rational choice theory ignores the concept of identity or reduces it to revealed preferences. On the other hand, internalist rational choice theory considers identity as a key concept in explaining collective action, because it permits to include expressive motivations in the models. From an internalist point of view, the paper ends proposing a definition of social identity as a net of beliefs about oneself.
