Abstract

This research addresses the relationship between intrinsic job quality and workers' perceived health, showing a strong link between job content and individual well-being. Aspects such as lack of social support or high work intensity are important risk factors for workers' health. For this purpose, we construct both an Intrinsic Work Quality Index and a self-perceived health index, using data from the European Working Conditions Survey 2015 for Spain. We study this causal relationship through a linear regression analysis, linking the intrinsic components of work as independent variables with self-perceived health as dependent variable, also including socio-labour dimensions (social class, gender and age) and extrinsic working conditions (type of contract, type of working day and public/private sector) as control variables. As main results, we highlight a positive effect of social support in the work environment as well as the negative effect of high intensity on the self-perceived health of the working population.
