Abstract

This paper focuses on one among the various dimensions of the process of secularization, namely, the secularization of knowledge. Firstly, the paper explores Durkheim's and Weber's classic theories of the secularization of knowledge. Secondly, it discusses some of the most common explanations of this process that point out a continuity between sacred and secular knowledge, respectively. Finally, it proposes an interpretation of the process of secularization of knowledge in terms of the principie of "heterogony of purposes".
