Participation in associations by population aged over sixty-five in Spain. An analysis of its effects and sectorial public policy suggestions

In our societies age and the living conditions of our older population are a relevant object of study. How to reach the final stage of life in the most satisfactory way and least costly for society, is a matter of growing concern. This article studies participation in associations as an active ageing practice with effects on the quality of life. Part of the results from an investigation on the quality of life in old age will be shown, summarized as follows: certain features of the distress associated with old age are alleviated by the benefits of active participation. Regular association practice allows a less traumatic transit into old age. Neither the whole elderly population is equally vulnerable nor every association practice is beneficial, hence the most vulnerable sectors -which would profit best from a selective prompt into association practice- are identified, and a clear line of action is proposed for public policies aimed at the elderly population.
