Studies on occupational mobility have identified barriers to female career progression to positions of responsibility. Nevertheless, analyses have paid less attention to the phenomenon of sticky floor as a typical feature of female employment and career paths. The study of sticky floor tends to focus on the organizational and cultural barriers that limit women’s employment trajectories, particularly in feminized routine jobs, such as administrative ones. Here, we explore the structural nature of this phenomenon, linking it to horizontal and vertical occupational segregation. Through the data of the Continuous Sample of Working Lives (MCVL, in Spanish), the potential magnitude of the sticky floor in male and female employment and its impact on the occupational mobility of women and men, between 2007 and 2019, in Spain are contrasted.
