Learning to pay for sex: the production of hegemonic masculinity in the commercialized sexual practices

This article shows some of the main results of the research ‘Learning to pay for sex’, in which a new approach on the study of commercialized heterosexual practices in Catalonia is given. The focus is set on the experiences of young men who have been in an erotic club or private flat, having paid for sex or not. Through a focus group and 10 individual interviews to these young men, we show the relationship between the social construction of the model of hegemonic masculinity – taking the perspective of Raewyn Connell – and the commercialized heterosexual practices. As a main conclusion, a set of strategies that young men carry out in order to learn how to pay for sex are detected. Also, we identify a desire of the respondents to fit in the model of hegemonic masculinity, as well as cracks and contraditions in its accomplishment.
